First Nations Scholarships

A First Nations Scholarship at Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College aims to honour and support students who maintain a deep connection with their First Nations heritage and actively engage in promoting First Nations issues. The Scholarship Committee carefully evaluates each application to select deserving recipients who embody the values of inclusion and excellence upheld by the College.

To apply, students will need to provide the following:

  1. Personal Statement: Applicants are required to submit a handwritten personal statement or essay to the Principal outlining why they wish to be educated at Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College. It should also outline their achievements, goals, aspirations, and reasons for applying for the scholarship. The statement must address each of criteria of the First Nations Scholarship Criteria below.
  2. Letters of Recommendation: Applicants are required to supply no more than three letters of recommendation from respected Elders, mentors, or individuals who have a strong understanding of the student’s First Nations heritage, capabilities, and character. These letters offer valuable insights into the applicant’s First Nations connections and admirable personal attributes.
  3. Academic reports: Upload your last four academic reports, NAPLAN results and any academic awards received by the applicant.
  4. Interview: Applicants will be required to participate in an interview to further assess their suitability for the scholarship. This interview may focus on academic interests, goals, and the applicant’s potential contribution to the community at the College.
First Nations Scholarship Criteria
First Nations Heritage: Applicants must identify as First Nations and provide documentation or confirmation of their First Nations heritage. This may include proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent from themselves or their family members.
Commitment to Education: Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to their education and academic achievement. This may be evidenced by consistent attendance, engagement in learning activities, and a desire to succeed academically.
Community Involvement: Applicants must be actively engaged with their First Nations community and demonstrate a commitment to giving back. This involvement may include participation in cultural events, community service initiatives, or leadership roles within the First Nations community.
Leadership & Personal Growth: Applicants must exhibit leadership qualities, resilience, and a willingness to overcome challenges. This may include demonstrating perseverance in the face of adversity, showing initiative in pursuing personal goals, and actively seeking opportunities for personal and academic growth.
